About JAS

A Love Story, Told Through Objects
Thirty years ago, Jan and Kristina moved into what was then a raw, open space — the "IJzernatieloft" — needing room to store not only their ideas, but a growing collection of tribal and eclectic artworks from across the globe. The top floor became their home, and the rooftop? A dreamy terrace with a lush garden and even a few chickens. A secret oasis above the city.
Art That Meant Something
Each piece in JAS served a purpose in its original cultural context — to heal, to protect, to celebrate life or mourn its loss. Fertility figures, initiation masks, ceremonial robes — every artifact hums with history.
"Just like Picasso, who fell in love with African sculpture in his quest to break free from realism, I found something raw and true in those pieces. They're not just objects — they're emotions carved in wood."
— Kristina Engels
THE BOOK
Anima Mundi is a comprehensive catalog showcasing the private collection of Jan & Kristina Engels. This exquisite volume brings together years of passionate collecting and deep appreciation for African art and cultural heritage.
The book features stunning high-resolution photography that captures the intricate details and profound beauty of each piece in the collection. Every artifact is presented with expert commentary and historical context, providing readers with a deeper understanding of the cultural significance and artistic value of these remarkable works.
More than just a catalog, Anima Mundi is a journey through the soul of African art, revealing the spiritual connections and cultural narratives embedded in each piece. The title "Anima Mundi" – meaning "the soul of the world" – reflects the universal language of art that transcends geographical boundaries and speaks to our shared human experience.
